Can The Gel Manicure Be Removed At Home Without Damaging The Nails

Gel manicure is in fashion. It is only necessary to realize the number of chains and nail salons that have proliferated in recent times. Unlike the regular manicure, the semi-permanent is applied with a gel polish that is hardened (cured) under an ultraviolet light lamp. The appearance is identical to that of a traditional nail polish manicure, but with the great advantage that it lasts for weeks. We will only have to remove these gel nails when the natural ones have grown enough to make it unsightly or if the enamel has begun to deteriorate.

Acrylic nails, on the other hand, would be comparable to hair extensions, since they are false nails that adhere to the nail during the manicure, modifying the length and shape of the natural nails. Both types of manicure can be maintained based on periodic fillings if we are interested, as the natural nail grows, to make them last for months.

However, with the variety of options and trends that we find today in the world of nail art with Hologram gel nail polish, there are many who decide to wear a new manicure frequently. The big drawback is that every time we want to remove the semi-permanent gel manicure, we have to go to an aesthetic center to have it removed.

When we talk about semi-permanent manicures, the most effective is to use pure acetone, since it is the only product that will remove the gel effectively. In the case of acetone make-up removers, the more acetone concentration the product has, the more effective it will be and the less it will take to remove the gel manicure.

However, with the variety of options and trends that we find today in the world of «nail art», there are many who decide to wear a new manicure frequently. The big drawback is that every time we want to remove the semi-permanent gel manicure, we have to go to an aesthetic center to have it removed.

When we talk about semi-permanent manicure, the most effective is to use pure acetone, since it is the only product that will remove the gel effectively. In the case of acetone make-up removers, the more acetone concentration the product has, the more effective it will be and the less it will take to remove the gel manicure and let’s see how to use gel polish.

Step 1

Since pure acetone will be the main asset when it comes to softening the gel manicure, it is advisable to start by filing the surface of the nails. For this it is necessary to use a polishing block or the most abrasive side of a file. The goal is to remove that first layer of manicure shine, which has helped our nails stay intact all this time. It is also possible to use a lathe, as they do in salons, although it is a professional tool that most do not usually have at home.

After this step, the nails will have a scratched and matte appearance, since we will have removed that last layer of “topcoat”. But the semi-permanent enamel will still be there.

Step 2

The proper way to remove that gel polish is to get the acetone into your nails until they soften. To do this, since we have already removed the protective layer of the manicure with the file, we can resort to several options:

  • Special thimbles to remove the gel polish: They are the kind of silicone capsules that are placed on each finger and that allows us to keep the nails soaked in acetone for the time necessary to make it comfortable and safe to remove the manicure. These thimbles are filled with pure acetone or any specific remover and the fingers are inserted so that they are exposed to the product.
  • Cotton and aluminum foil: This homemade method consists of soaking pieces of cotton in acetone and covering them with aluminum foil to keep them attached to the fingers.
  • Tweezers and cotton: Another accessory that we will find to hold the cotton soaked in acetone are these finger tweezers. In this case, we will only have to soak the cotton, place them on the nails and fix them with the tweezers for the necessary time.

Step 3

After this time, it is not recommended to rub the nails with cotton (in case we have used it), since we would only spread the nail polish on the finger. Instead, we can remove the cotton by pressing towards the tip of the nail and then use an orange stick or a cuticle pusher to finish removing the softened nail polish.

Step 4

Once the semi-permanent gel manicure is completely removed, it is advisable to apply a product or treatment to the nail to recover them. We are talking about products such as moisturizing oils, with nourishing and restorative agents.
